(*NOTE: The 1990 and 1992 surveys were calculated differently so the
information on the % of types of drugs used is incomparable. We were able to adapt the 1994 and 1996 survey to make the results
comparable.)
To get more detailed information on
drug use, we reworded the question to get more specific data in 1998.

The majority of students we surveyed in 1998 were between
19-20 years old (42.8%), followed by those students who are either 21 or 22
(30.6%). The two greatest class
categories we surveyed correspond to these statistics—29.8% were freshmen and
28.1% were seniors.
·
Over 50% of students surveyed had a GPA of between 3.0-4.0.
·
The percentage of students drinking increased from 78.4% to
86.3%…this may be due to the greater number of students surveyed that were 21
or older. Also, it could reflect the
change in our student culture that seems to be more focused on alcohol
use. We added an additional question to
the survey this year about how often they drink….33.5% (the greatest
percentage) drink only 2-4 times a month.
Almost 28% drink 5-10 times a month (weekly) and 17% drink more than 10
times a month.
·
The majority of our students are drinking at house parties,
friend’s houses, or bars. Most of our
students (83%) state that the primary place they drink is off campus with
friends.
·
Some of the most startling statistics are in the amounts
students are drinking and the number of hours they’re drinking on Thursdays,
Fridays, and Saturdays.

More students are frequently drinking due to peer pressure
and the desire to fit in. The
percentage has increased from 4.7% in 1996 to 11.7% in 1998.
·
The percentage of students using or having used drugs other than
alcohol has decreased slightly from 38% in 1996 to 32.4% in 1998. We changed the format of the individual drug
use question to see how often they are using different types of drugs. Please look at page 5 of the survey to see the breakdown of this behavior.
·
The percentage of students who started using drugs other than alcohol when they came to college
has decreased from 17.2% in 1996 to 13.9% in 1998, but the percentage of
students using more drugs since
coming to the university has increased from 5.4% in 1996 to 11.6% in 1998.

The percentages of various consequences of alcohol use have

·
The percentage of students who smoke has decreased slightly according
to the survey (from 22.8% in 1996 to 21.5% in 1998)...but that may have
something to do with the ages of students we surveyed. From what we know, the older students are
NOT smoking as much as the younger students...our results may not be totally
indicative of what is actually happening. We did a gender comparison of smoking
and found that 24.8% of the men surveyed responded that they smoke, while 18.5%
of the women surveyed said they smoked.
